Thoracolumbar scoliosis is an abnormal curvature in lower thoracic and the upper lumbar regions of the spine. Left thoracic scoliosis or right thoracic scoliosis. It affects women, although men can suffer as well.
What is a Structural scoliosis? Idiopathic 70 – 80 % of all cases. Congenital. Neuromuscular: poliomyelitis, cerebral palsy, syringomyelia, muscular dystrophy, amyotonia congenita, Friedreich’s ataxia. Neurofibromatosis. Mesenchymal disorders: Marfan’s syndrome, Morquio’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, osteogenesis imperfecta, certain dwarves. Trauma: fractures, irradiation, surgery.
The thoracolumbar curve defined as having the apex at the level of Th12 or L1 or at the disc Th12/L1. The typical clinical appearance of patient with the thoracolumbar curve is trunk imbalance and thoracolumbar hump.
